Design and fabrication of prototype of passive optical converter for connecting plastic and glass telecom optical fibres

The concept of the hybrid fibre network structure, in which silica fibres are used in backhaul networks and polymer fibres are used in local area networks, is very promising due to the employment of the main advantages of both types of fibres, such as excellent transmission properties of silica glass fibres and low cost and ease of installation of polymer fibre. A key element for implementation of such hybrid networks is low-loss and low-cost connection of both types of fibres, which is why within the project we elaborate the concept and technology of passive converter for connecting the polymer and glass telecom fibres.
